There are many things to see and do whilst visiting this picturesque part of the world. Take a stroll up to Ampleforth Abbey & College you can sample Fr Rainer's Cider or take tea in the tea room. The school is also home to St Alban's Centre, a leisure centre that is open to the public daily and has a 25m Pool, Gym and Squash Courts. We are situated five miles from the historic market town of Helmsley which is definitely worth a visit to wander around the numerous antique & gift shops and tea rooms as well as Helmsley Castle and the Walled Garden.

Our location in the Howardian Hills and on the edge of the North York Moors makes us perfectly situated for walking and cycling. For those interested in other outdoor activities we can certainly recommend Ampleforth College Golf Course which is located in the village itself, Kirkbymoorside Golf Course , Sinnington Riding School and Yorkshire 4x4 Off Road Driving Centre.

A visit to North Yorkshire would not be complete without a trip to one of the numerous stately homes. Within a ten mile radius of The Fairfax Arms we have Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, Duncombe Park, Newburgh Priory and Hovingham Hall.

North Yorkshire is also home to a large number of ruined abbeys and castles, including the nearby Byland Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey and Helmsley Castle as well as Whitby Abbey & the beautiful Fountain's Abbey which are a little further afield but certainly worth the trip.

The Yorkshire Coast is less than an hour's drive and you can explore the towns of Scarborough, Whitby, Filey & Robin Hood's Bay or take a trip on the infamous North York Moors Railway which was used in the filming of the Harry Potter films. Take in the stunning scenery on one of the steam trains that run between Pickering and Whitby, passing though Goathland where TV's Heartbeat was filmed.
